Attorney Michael Xavier (third from right) flanked by members of his family. Justice Brassington Reynolds is at Xavier’s immediate right.
Michael Xavier, son of former Minister of Public Works, Carl Anthony Xavier is the newest addition to the Guyana Bar Association.
He was admitted by Justice Brassington Reynolds at the Georgetown Supreme Court, last Friday. His petition was presented by Attorney–at–law, Mishka Puran.
The young attorney attended Stella Maris Primary School, the Bishops’ High School and later the University of Guyana (UG).
At UG, he earned a first degree in International Relations and a postgraduate diploma in International Studies, before embarking on his legal studies.
He also graduated with his Bachelor of Laws, (LLB) from the University Of Guyana, before attending the Hugh Wooding Law School. At Hugh Wooding, Xavier made the Principal’s Honour List and acquired his Legal Education Certificate (LEC).
In addition to his academic accomplishments, the new lawyer is a former member of the Guyana National under-21 Hockey team.
In his acceptance speech, the new attorney expressed gratitude to his parents, Anthony Xavier and mom Elizabeth, wife Mikhaila Puran and his extended family, for their support and guidance in making his dream a reality.
“I would not be where I am today without the assistance, guidance and sacrifice of many individuals along this journey. I would like to recognize and give thanks to God for all that I have accomplished, for without his guidance, none of this would have been possible.”
“For as long as I can remember, my Dad, Carl Anthony Xavier, and mom Elizabeth Xavier, never stopped supporting and encouraging me to pursue my dream.”
“I would like to give thanks to my wife Mikhaila Puran for being my rock through this leg of the journey,” he added.
Xavier said that his journey to become an Attorney -at -Law began many years ago.
“Anytime anyone would ask me what I wanted to be when I grow up, I remember immediately thinking and saying that I wanted to be a lawyer,” he added.
“Shortly after High School I began pursuing that dream, culminating in this very moment appearing before this Honourable Court…”
As such, Xavier noted that throughout his legal career, he would seek to continually boost his knowledge of the field of work.
“Throughout my academic career I was learning. Nevertheless, it is with much ambition that I say I endeavour to continue learning and to develop my knowledge base, to open my mind to new perspectives and ideas and even pursue further studies.”
He also pledged to continue to earn the respect of all the members of the legal profession and those persons “whom I may come into contact with over the course of my career.”
“It is my intention to return here to contribute to the development of Guyana’s and the Caribbean’s jurisprudence and practice with honesty and integrity,” the Attorney stated.
This is Xavier’s second admission to the Bar in the Region.
He was also admitted to the Trinidad bar on November 20, 2015, and is currently working in Trinidad at Alum Chambers with Lionel Michael Luckhoo, son of Lionel Luckhoo senior.
