The preliminary inquiry (PI) into the murder of Ganesh Ramlall, former owner of the Regent Multiplex Mall, Georgetown which was scheduled to continue yesterday in the Leonora Magistrate’s Court, has
been adjourned until next Thursday, September 8.
Lennox ‘Soldier Man’ Roberts, 32, of 2279 Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara; Fazeel ‘Javed’ Bacchus, 21, of 7 Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara and Kurt ‘Banana’ Erskine, 35, of 285 Section ‘C’, Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara are currently remanded for the indictable offence.
According to reports, on July 5, 2015, Ramlall also called ‘Boyo’ had just returned home from a barbecue and had gone to use the outside bathroom. The 48-year-old businessman was reportedly confronted by four men who shot him to the head and chest and took away his jewellery, a wallet and escaped.
Ramlall was later pronounced dead on arrival at the West Demerara Regional Hospital. The bandits prematurely aborted the attack when an alarm was raised by the businessman’s wife and neighbours.
At the last court hearing, Police Sergeants Rodwell Sarrabo and Salaish Roopnarine had given evidence when the Voir Dire (trial within a trial) continued. This Voir Dire is being done to ascertain whether a caution statement given by Bacchus was given by willingly or involuntarily. It will also determine if the caution statement can be admitted as evidence in the PI.
Sergeant Sarrabo is the Officer in Charge of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Brickdam Police Station. Sergeant Roopnarine is stationed at the Special Organized Crime Unit (SOCU). However, at the time of the murder, both policemen were attached to the Major Crimes Investigation Unit, Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters, Eve Leary, Georgetown.
