– Granger tells Women’s arm of Party

David Granger, following the completion of the 19th Biennial National Congress of Women (NCW) yesterday, charged the NCW to show leadership, stewardship, fellowship and statesmanship.
“You must be leaders in your groups and in your communities…. you must exercise stewardship through your service….you must band together in support of each other, showing fellowship……the NCW must show statesmanship , we must show that we are better, let them do their worst and we will do our best,” he said.
Granger, who also conducted the installation, also challenged the NCW – the women’s arm of the People’s National Congress Reform – to lead in the planning and preparations for the Diamond Jubilee of the PNCR which will be held next year.
The NCW was founded in October 1957 as the People’s National Congress Women Auxiliary (PNCWA).
According to a release from the PNCR, the Convention was held under the theme, “PNCR Vanguard of a Green Economy”, and was chaired by Executive member of the NCW, Carol Smith- Joseph. The Welcome and Opening remarks were delivered by Volda Lawrence,

In her remarks, Lawrence noted that after a very long time the PNCR has a Leader who is the President of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana. She then proceeded to give a brief history of the women’s arm of the party, and noted that the PNC was built through the sacrifice and hard work of the party’s women.
She said that the early leaders of the NCW left a rich legacy of service, and outlined the many progressive and entrepreneurial ventures they engaged in.
“I am tired of begging… and the people we are begging are tired of us begging” she said.
She added also that the NCW must engage in enterprise so that they can be economically sound. “We must train our women so that they can be employed and we must teach them how to be employers,” she said.
The First Vice Chairman of the NCW challenged the Delegates and Observers to significantly increase its membership over the biennium, and return to the next convention more vibrant and an economically sound organisation.

National Secretary of the NCW, Genevieve Allen, reported to the Convention on the work of the organisation over the period under review. She highlighted the work of the NCW during the May 2015 General and Regional Elections and the recently concluded local government elections.
Nineteen persons competed for positions on the Central Committee of the NCW where only fifteen of those persons were elected.
Meanwhile, the 19th Biennial Delegates Congress of the PNCR concluded last Sunday with the top heads successfully retaining their respective positions.
Granger, who went unchallenged, charged the elected office bearers to inspire, advise, and “from top to bottom the coalition must be at its best behavior.”
Basil Williams, MP, who also contested unchallenged, returned as Chairman of the Party whilst Ronald Bulkan, MP – also unchallenged – returned as Party Treasurer. Lawrence and embattled Minister of Public Health, Dr. George Norton, both returned to their posts as Vice Chairs.
