Aug 28, 2016 Letters
Dear Editor,
We are seeking your kind assistance in publishing our concern in your newspaper at your convenience. We would also be grateful if this letter could be forwarded to the relevant authorities so a feedback could be provided to the citizens who are being affected.
Reference is made to an article in your newspaper on June 24, 2016, with regards to a number of housing schemes across the country to be given electricity during the course of the next month; July 2016. We note to date this has not yet materialized and there have not been many efforts to enhance the schemes, particularly the Kilcoy Chesney Housing Scheme in Berbice. The residents of the scheme have made several enquires as to what stage the project might be, however, there has not been any forthcoming explanation or clarification on the matter.
The residents who are already living in the scheme are in great discomfort as they are deprived of a basic necessity; electricity, a service that all citizens should enjoy. Of great concern are those who left their houses unoccupied as they await the fulfillment of the promise of electricity, amongst other things.
Editor, many persons would have accessed loan to construct their houses, but are now unable to live in them. The situation is also dire as now we are forced to make monthly loan payments while still renting a property. We would also like to bring to the attention of the relevant authorities, the deplorable condition of the scheme as it relates to the drainage system and the streets; these are atrocious especially when it rains. At this point, we the citizens of Kilcoy Chesney Housing Scheme, Corentyne, Berbice are looking for definite answers and prompt actions on the following matters/issues:
1 When would the scheme be provided with the services of Guyana Power & Light?
2 When would the proper infrastructure/road be put into place?
3 What plans are in place for the drainage and irrigation system, since it is currently in a terrible state?
We the residents of the scheme faithfully kept our end of the contract, when we were called to make our payments for the lot allocated. We tried all honest means to ensure we effect the payments by or before the stipulated time. Our question to the relevant authorities therefore is: Why can’t you keep your side of the contract, so that we the citizens of Guyana could enjoy a comfortable well deserved life?”
