– Suspects on the run
A family of six is now contemplating their next move after their home was reportedly set on fire by a disgruntled family member yesterday afternoon.
The house, located at lot 14 Boerasirie Housing Scheme, West Coast Demerara, went up in flames sometime around 12:45 yesterday. Two men were seen fleeing from the premises shortly after. Residents indentified one of the men as Dwight Marks, an occupant of the home.
According to neighbours, Marks resided at the home with his two sisters, nieces and nephews. Residents recalled that on the night before, the suspect was heard arguing with his siblings over the visitors that they would entertain at the home.
Yesterday, residents claimed to have seen Marks enter the home with an unidentified individual as he uttered repeatedly that he was going to ‘burn the f***ing house down’.
Soon after, a neighbour who requested anonymity said smoke could be seen billowing from the house. An alarm was raised and Marks and his apparent accomplice were seen running in separate directions.
“Is the mattress he (Marks) light. I hear he walking up and down and talking how he gun burn down the house. But I didn’t expect he would ah do it. But he smart, he set the fire at the door so nobody could go in and do anything. When the fire reel (fire truck) come, dem man couldn’t go in because the fire was right by the entrance,” one of the residents said.
No one was injured during the ordeal.
This publication was unable to locate any of the family members for a comment yesterday since it was revealed that they would have left the home earlier the morning to go to an island in the Essequibo River.
A police source told this publication that they are searching for the two suspects.
Marks was described by residents as a troublesome character who would terrorise his family frequently. He was previously charged, one neighbour said, for chopping his mother who now resides abroad.
“He does beat up his sister dem and put them out with dey children. He de burn up his mother things already but his mother does sorry for him and she don’t lock him up…Everything for dem girl get bun up. Dem man (fire fighters) couldn’t get to save nothing” one neighbour said.
