A City Magistrate on Friday dismissed the case against PPP/C member of Parliament Juan Edghill, of encumbering the city parapet in front his home with a derelict vehicle, brought by the Georgetown Mayor and City Council.
The charge was dismissed by Magistrate Annette Singh at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Edghill was represented by Attorney- at- Law, Sase Gunraj.
According to the charge, police said Edghill, a former junior Finance Minister, on April 17, last, at South Ruimveldt, Georgetown, blocked the southern parapet of Sugar Cane Street by parking motor vehicle PFF 527, in breach of city government by-laws. Edghill denied the charge.
The court heard that the vehicle was in a neglected state with deflated tyres and overgrown grass surrounding it after it had been parked there for some time.
The Prosecution had indicated that a city officer warned Edghill and gave him two weeks to remove the vehicle, but he did not.
The parliamentarian was placed on self-bail and ordered to return to court to face a trial. However after weeks of trial, the parliamentarian has been acquitted of the allegations.
In a statement following the end of the matter, Edghill noted that while the dismissal represents victory for him, he is however seriously concerned about the abuse of the judicial process to target, intimidate and victimize Guyanese for political and other purposes….’’
“I am urging that we continue to build a society where social justice, fairness and equity are upheld by all,” he posited.
