On October 24, 2015 Clive Atwell buckled in the 9th round of his
WBC FECARBOX Lightweight title fight against Dexter Gonzales at the Giftland Mall and after an emergency surgery was done by Dr Amernauth Dookie the same night, Atwell has opted to do his second surgery in the USA.
The boxer needs to have a plate inserted to protect his brain and traveled to Trinidad where Dr Steve Mahadeo from the St Clair Medical Centre provided him with the cost for the operation.
After two members of his team that had accompanied him to the US to solicit support returned to Guyana for work, Atwell was joined by Lady Ira Lewis who offered assistance.
”She has gotten support from Dr Cort of the Guyana Medical Mission who began investigations to decipher the cause of numbness and pain in my leg and in my back. It was discovered that I was suffering from a Herniated Disc believed to be from lack of proper treatment after first surgery and bad movements.
I am having treatment for those problems and found a surgeon who will do the next operation through the assistance of President of Ring 10, Matt Farrago” Atwell disclosed. Ring 10 is an organisation set up to help boxers who are finding difficulties in funding their medical expenses.
”Through the input of Matt, a Surgeon has agreed to do the operation but he highlighted the risk factors because the time has long passed and the wound (from the first Surgery) had healed” Atwell explained.
Atwell says he has to undergo several tests including CT scans, ECG Scan and MRIs which would cost approximately US$12,000 and will be partly covered by the insurance policy he recently obtained.
”The surgery is scheduled to be done as soon as I get Medical clearance from my Primary Care physician and confirmation from the insurance on their payment towards the surgery. I am thankful for the support from all who have helped.” Atwell noted.
He stated that he was grateful for his wife’s prayers and support and Fly Jamaica who donated the tickets for his trip to USA.
Monica Sanchez, CEO of the Miss Caricom Organisation Pageant in the US, is also helping. Atwell says he knows God will be with him when he goes for his surgery.
