Town Clerk Royston King has given the City Engineer’s Department three months to complete the rehabilitation of the Kitty Market.
The historic edifice was in a state of disrepair with defective roofs, floor, walls and ceilings. The previous Council said that the repairs to the market should be contracted out since it perceived that the Council did not possess the requisite skill set to restore the structure.
King expressed faith in the competency of the Engineers and assigned the task of restoring the structure to that department. Restorative works commenced in February 2016. Completion was delayed by several setbacks including very limited money and materials.
So far, the Council has expended $110 million in repairs. It is estimated that it will cost the Council $240 million to restore the entire structure. This includes the addition of a western wing covering both the ground floor and the first floor to accommodate the hundreds of applications that the municipality has received from previous and potential stallholders. Existing stallholders would retain their stalls in that facility.
In the upcoming week the Markets Department will commence interviewing applicants, who have a desire to operate at the facility.
The new structure would include an Information Technology centre, an area for community activities, grocery, haberdashers, restaurants and a recreational area, which should cater to the needs of the local community.
Meanwhile, the administration is contemplating the designs and construction of a double decker mall at “Bourda Green”, Bourda Market, the extension of the northern section of the Stabroek Market and the upgrading of the New Vendors Mall to a three-storey shopping mall. These are in the planning stage.
The municipal administration hopes to begin a series of consultation with vendors and other stake holders, on these new ventures.
Also, the Town Clerk has urged vendors to organize themselves into committees, which would make representation on behalf of the vendors to the Council. The office of the Town Clerk will oversee this particular process.
