– arm almost severed
Pandemonium broke out at the La Penitence Market just around 11.00 hrs yesterday when a jealous man brutally chopped his ex-lover while she was shopping in the Saffon Street location.
The victim, Wanita Heerelall, 31, of Laing Avenue, was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation with a fractured skull and several wounds about her body. One her arms was almost severed, her reputed husband said.
According to reports, the attacker, who resides on the West Coast Demerara, came to the market and was walking around the area looking for her.
Eyewitnesses told this publication that Heerelall came to the market at around 11:00hrs to do some shopping. She was walking along Saffon Street when the ex-lover reportedly pulled her hand as though he wanted to converse with her.
Several vendors along Saffon Street said that Heerelall pulled away from the individual and told him that she didn’t want anything to do with him. The man who is known in the market as “Buckman” reportedly then pulled out a “chopper” and chopped Heerelall repeatedly in the head, arms and stomach.
Several vendors rushed to her aid. Eyewitness said that the assailant received a sound thrashing at the hands of several enraged persons before being handed over to the police.
Several witnesses told this publication that the man had bought the chopper and sharpened it at the market earlier in the morning.
When this publication spoke with Heerelall’s reputed husband, the man said that the suspect was once in a relationship with Heerelall. He said that he usually accompanies her to the market on Sundays but this Sunday he stayed in to do some chores.
This newspaper understands that the woman now resides in Laing Avenue with her reputed husband. According to sources the suspect constantly harasses Heerelall and doesn’t want to accept that she has moved on with her life.
Her husband said that he hoped the arm wouldn’t have to be amputated and called for justice.
