Headquarters take early lead with swimming title
Headquarters (HQ) jumped out to early honours in the 2016 Guyana
Police Force Inter-Division Championships when they retained the Swimming title, which was introduced last year, Sunday at the National Aquatic Centre, Lilliendaal.
The defending champions, HQ ended with 124 points to take an early lead in the Championships, as ‘A’ Division finished second with 94 points. Country Division was third with 62 points, while ‘B’ Division finished in the cellar position on 17 points.
Consistent performances from Kiticia Pellew and Eva Harry ensured that HQ triumph over rivals ‘A’ Division, while Deon Primus was outstanding for Country Division. Harry and Pellew swam among the top three places in all of the day’s female events.
In the Women’s 50m backstroke, HQ took the top two spots with Pellew taking gold and Harry silver in times 1:02.88s and 1:12.92s respectively.
In the 50m freestyle, Pellew reached the wall in 42.87 seconds to take second while third went to Harry, who had a time of 49.57 seconds. Country Division’s, Davena Edwards won the race in a time of 39.50 seconds.
Pellew took gold in the 50m butterfly where she swam 49.17 seconds, ahead of Harry (57:87) in another one-two finish. Harry finally landed a gold medal in the 50m breaststroke with a time of 53.43 seconds. Edwards (1:04.64s) was second.
In the male competition, Primus took home two gold and two silver medals. Primus ruled in the men’s 50m backstroke (38.74s), and 50m butterfly (35.54s). He took second places in the 50m freestyle (28.50s) and 50m breaststroke (41.78s).
Country Division’s Lindon Barkoye won the 50m freestyle in a time of 28.16 seconds. Barkoye also championed the 50m breaststroke in 38.34 seconds. He also claimed a bronze medal from his performance in the 50m backstroke (41.87s).
‘A’ Division’s, Andy Persaud also performed well, winning a silver medal in the 50m butterfly (36.62s), bronze in the 50m freestyle (30.50s), and bronze in the 50m breaststroke (45.40s).
The swimming competition marked the beginning of the GPF Inter-Division Championships that will continue today at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary from 10:00am with the anticipated athletics showdown. The event will conclude on Friday.
