Dear Editor,
In keeping with the President’s call for the citizenry to become more patriotic, I hereby request your assistance to reach out to the government on this matter. A few days ago I had the opportunity to talk with a group of students at a secondary school. I shared with them that I was a school dropout, and I was a soldier in the American army. I told them that joining the army saved my life and that it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made at eighteen years old.
I encouraged them to take their education seriously and to join the Guyana Defence Force, if at this point in their lives they’re still ambivalent as to what they want to do with their lives when they get out of school. After my talk, I was asked many questions about being a soldier, and my experiences in war in Iraq and Afghanistan.
As I was returning to Georgetown from my trip, I met a group of soldiers from the GDF. I told some of them no older than 25 years old that I was proud of them for joining the army. I told them that they are a good example and role model to other young people.
I told them that they will be the future leaders of our country. I told them the training that they have received from the army will prepare them for many challenges in life. One of the soldiers told me that he was a school dropout just as I was. After talking with them and the children at the secondary school, I felt strongly inspired and motivated that I wanted to do more.
These soldiers’ commitment to the call of military service goes directly to the president’s call for patriotism in addition to their own personal development of themselves, which builds character, courage and pride for one’s country. Editor, because of my experience with the school and the soldiers, I would like to go into as many of the nation’s high schools across the length and breadth of Guyana and talk about the importance of a good education and joining the GDF. To make this possible I am offering my service without compensation.
Editor, I hereby request your assistance in making contact with the right people so that I can do more to help. My contact information: Email quallis1_s@yahoo.com
