Aimed at addressing tax related matters countrywide, the Guyana Revenue Authority met with shop owners in the town of Linden during the Ministry of the Presidency’s “Government meets the people” outreach exercises.
This was done last Friday at the McKenzie Sports Club.
The GRA delegation comprised Commissioner General (Ag) Ms. Ingrid Griffith; Manager of Integrated Regional Tax Offices, Satesh Basdeo; Manager of Tax Advisory Services Naresh Bobb-Semple; and Communications Officer Fabian Clowes.
In an invited comment, Griffith said, “Anyone with any issue relating to the GRA would be able to have them sorted out here with us… If we are unable to finalise it at this end, we will do the necessary research and ground work back at Head Office and provide the taxpayer with a status update.”
Prior to Friday’s event some shop owners had been engaged by GRA to regularize their compliance and had been asked to take corrective action in this regard.
According to a statement issued by GRA, its representatives supplied the entrepreneurs with relevant information about the documents needed to obtain a shop licence.
First time applicants for a Certificate of Compliance were informed that the licence is now valid for six months instead of three months. According to a statement by the GRA, this change was implemented with the blessing of the Governing Board after an in depth review of its effectiveness. Further, the extension came about in response to concerns which were raised by members of the business community.
Further, taxpayers also inquired about the Mortgage Interest Relief (MIR) facility which targets first time home owners having a mortgage not exceeding $30M. The statement said that residents showed keen interest in the time it would take to access relief from the date of application.
It was reported that the Tax Authority also adopted one of the suggestions made which was the introduction of a transition programme. This will boost the level of services at the GRA’s Regional Integrated Tax Offices. Currently, one of these is located at Casuarina Drive, Mackenzie.
