Half centuries from Sachin Singh and Joshua Persaud handed Guyana a 60-run victory over the Windward Islands when the Regional U17 50-over tournament concluded yesterday in Trinidad.
Singh and Persaud featured 162 for the second wicket as Guyana posted a challenging 253-5 after deciding to bat at National Cricket Centre.
The duo came together after Bhaskar Yadram was dismissed for one in the second over and frustrated their opponents with sensible batting. Singh who faced 123 balls struck four fours and one six before he went for 78, while Persaud hit two fours and one six in scoring 77 off 112 balls.
Ashmead Nedd was run out for 33 (4×4,2×6) while Kurt Lovell made 28 (2×4) not out. Urnell Thomas claimed 3-51.
Windwards were bowled out for 193 in 44.2 overs in reply. Micah Joseph scored 64 (6×4,1×6), Tijourne Pope 45 (4×6), Johann Jerimah 31 and Tahj Tavanier 20. Yadram snared 3- 16 off 5.2 overs while Joshua Jones, Alphius Bookie, Nedd and Kevin Sinclair had one each for Guyana who played unbeaten in the tournament but took the runner up spot on 20.3 points, while the Trinidad and Tobago were declared winners with 20.6. The host nation got 0.6 bonus points while Guyana arguably the strongest team in the tournament managed 0.3; both teams suffered two rained out games.
Windwards placed third on 14.2 followed by Barbados on 14.0, Jamaica 7.3 and Leewards 1.4.
