Jamaica beat Guyana by 43 runs…Barbados play T&T in tomorrow’s final
By Sean Devers
For the second match in a row at Everest the hard
work of the ground staff ensured that cricket was possible in the Regional Women’s Super50 Cricket tournament when games at Enterprise and Enmore were both washed out yesterday which was hard hit by the adverse weather.
When the contest eventual commenced at 14:50hrs, Guyana won the toss and invited Jamaica to bat on a slow track and sluggish outfield which had lots of sand to aid in the drying process. Jamaica won by 43-runs in a game reduced to 20 overs.
T&T, who finished with 13 points, play Barbados in tomorrow’s final, set for Everest by virtue of a better net run rate than Guyana, who like the home team ended with 11 points.
Player-of-the-Match Chedean Nation stroked 35 from 37 balls with three fours, while Rashada Williams, who hit a four and a six in a 30-ball 25, rallied Jamaica to 125-8 off 20 overs after they had lost their first three wickets with the score on 23.
Left-arm seamer Erva Giddings had 3-13 including the prized scalp of West Indies T20 World Cup Captain and ICC’s number one t20 batter Stefanie Taylor and got support from Akaze Thompson, who followed up her 2-7 against the Leewards on Wednesday with 2-25.
Guyana, chasing 126 from 120 balls to cement a place in the final struggled to 82 all out in 17.4 overs as only Latoya Smith (16), West Indies batter Shamaine Campbell (16) and Thompson (11) reached double figures as West Indies players Vennesa Watts (3-10), Nation (2-10), Taylor (2-18) and Shanel Daley (2-10) bowled well for the ladies from the land of Wood and Water.
Jadian Morgan (17) and Taylor (5) took the score to 23 before Morgan who smashed Smartt delightfully to the cover boundary and dispatched her disdainfully over extra cover four and onto Carifesta Avenue, edged a drive to the Keeper as Smartt made the breakthrough in third over.
Taylor, one of five players with West Indies experience, stroked Giddings with imperial timing to the cover boundary. But the best female batter that the Caribbean has produced walked too far across her wicket and Giddings plucked out her leg-stump without addition to the score and the celebrations almost matched the World Cup final victory in India.
It was soon 23-3 when Giddings removed Daley for a duck before Natasha McClean (10) and Nation took the score to 58 with aggressive batting before Thompson got rid of McClean.
Nation and Williams continued to play their shots until Giddings dismissed Nation in the 16th over at 93-5. West Indies player Chenille Henry (0) was run out at the same total.
Tamika Sanford (6) dumped Thompson for six before she tried to repeat the shot next ball and was taken at long-off while Watts, who counted two fours in her unbeaten 15, ensured that Jamaica scored 24 from the last 14 balls.
Watched by a decent crowd which included the Guyana U-19 team which leaves for St Vincent next week, the T&T team and Windwards, who did not play a single game in the tournament, Guyana began their reply in overcast conditions and Mellissa Henry (6) was LWB at 24 to left-arm spinner Daley, who opened the bowling.
Smith hammered Henry for a six and a four before she was LBW to Nation four runs and one over later before Lashauna Toussaint (1) was run out at 33-3.
Kavita Yadram, whose injured leg was in a cast a few days before the tournament commenced, wasted four dot balls before she was bowled for a duck by Watts at 47-5 and when the classy Campbell edged a cut at Watts to the Keeper without addition to the score the required run rate was escalating.
Smartt (8) and Thompson (11) took the score to 60 but once Taylor removed them both in the space of nine runs the fat Lady was already clearing her throat and the contest soon ended in near darkness with the Street lights on.
Only four of the scheduled 15 games were played and it was good to see the GCB send extra covers last evening for tomorrow’s final.
