Soesdyke overcome Covent Garden

Soesdyke Secondary came from a goal down to 
beat Covent Garden Secondary 3-2 when the East Bank Demerara leg of the Digicel National Schools football tournament continued yesterday at Leonora.
Covent Garden took the lead as Jamassi Benjamin headed home a corner from Ronaldo Simmons in the 19th minute.
Soesdyke had an opportunity to draw level but Shannon Samnauth fired a weak shot which was easily kept out by the opposition goalkeeper following a buildup in front of goal. However, forward Tyrone Khan leveled the score in the 27th minute with a fine strike after gaining possession outside the area.
Soesdyke increased their pace fairly and created a few wonderful scoring chances but couldn’t finish while Covent Garden’s Simmons had a header saved just before half time.
Soesdyke made a buildup, but lost possession after midfielder Shaquanne Sam opted to play the ball back to the defenders instead of sending it forward, and Covent Garden striker Delroy Alves made use of the opportunity; after taking control he eluded two defenders before finding the back of the net from just outside the area to give his team the lead in the 53rd.
Nevertheless Soesdyke continued to attack and twelve minutes later they found the equaliser through Tyrone Khan who sent his shot into an empty net from inside the 18-yard box.
Both teams tried desperately for another goal and Soesdyke’s Tyrone Khan and Peter Richmond saw their shots being kept out, before Ernest Mc Lean slotted home from the edge of the area to take his team into the next round.
In the second encounter, West Demerara beat Vreed-en-Hoop 4-2. Ezan David handed Vreed-en-Hoop the lead in the 9th minute before Jeiel Johnson equalised in the 15th.
Compton Connelly restored Vreed-en-Hoop advantage in the 21, but Johnson netted in the 53rd and 65th while Glenroy Duncan scored in the 68th to seal victory for West Demerara.
