Team Guyana led by Sensei Garfield Newton of the Black Hawks Martial Arts Management Network, took a five-member Martial Arts team to compete at the North America Federation of Martial Arts (AFMA) International Martial Arts Championships where the entire Guyana contingent gained bragging rights in their respective divisions.
Sensei Kwasi Patrick, competing in the 45 and over division, is now the Kata forms and sparring champion, while Sensei Rodwell Allen won the 18 -35 kata division and is now the overall grand champion for kata. Jaydon James won the 9-11 sparing and got 3rd in kata, while Lee Anthony Lindee had three first places.
Sensei Garfield Newton, who competed in both the NAFMA and USA National Karate Championship, won five awards and three first places in the sparring, a first place in the jumping sidekicks and a second in the jumping front kick.
Since the team showed their skills at this international championship they have received numerous invitations to other championships in the USA.
“We were also invited to compete in the 20th Annual Universal Martial Arts Hall of Fame and Championships from the 11th to 13th of August 2016 at the Marriott Huston hotel. The team has started intense training for this upcoming event the team would like to thank all their family members for contributing to their success.” Newton told Kaieteur Sports yesterday.
Newton also participated in two acting seminars with the legendary Lady Dragon, the first female action Martial Arts movie star Cynthia Rothrock, who along with her Director is looking at options of doing a movie in Guyana.
The 59 year-old Rothrock explained that it would be a collaboration move between Guyana and Trinidad & Tobago but funding must be acquired to produce such a movie. (Sean Devers)
