Dear Editor,
“If Jesus was present in Guyana, today he would have voted for the PPP/C”. This comment was made by former Junior Finance Minister, Juan Edghill at a previous political rally, prior to the National and Regional Elections, 2015. Subsequently, former Presidential advisor, and parliamentary colleague, Gail Teixeira, responding to an expression of public concern over Edghill’s comment stated publicly. “It can be likened to Liberation Theology”.
Editor, to the best of my knowledge and if I am wrong, I would be subject to correction. Nowhere in Guyana, at any given time was Liberation Theology ever espoused. However, its conceptualization can be equated with former Prime Minister, Haiti, Bertrand Aristide, along with former Minister, Education & Culture, Nicaragua (within this hemisphere). Of interest, please note; both were Catholic priest that were eventually defrocked.
Meanwhile my reason for the question in relation to the above caption is: At that crucial juncture, why wasn’t there no denunciation from the Guyana Council of Churches if they do exist! Since over three decades ago, this august body was by far more vibrant promoting the virtues of democracy, free and fair elections, along with good governance. The monthly newspaper publication – Caribbean Contact, was the utilized medium at the time of highlighting the afore-mentioned regionally. However, if Edghill’s comment wasn’t deemed as an affront to Christianity then, what of the existing situation now? Would there be an additional silence now, albeit turning a blind eye?
Some “fly by night churches” are having self-anointed/appointed titular heads namely: Apostle, Bishop, Arch-Bishop, Prophet and Pope. By the way, how come the term Patriarch, have not being utilized as a titular head locally apart from the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, by other so called Christian Religious Leaders? From whence they came and are their churches affiliated to the Guyana Council of Churches? Once again if they do exist as the national body for the various Christian denominations, can there be a publication in the print media, in addition to an email address/Facebook of the following:
i) Executive Structure
ii) Address & Contact Numbers
iii) Aims & Objectives
iv) Active Membership, Titular Heads, background profiles and experience .i.e. years as a preacher/pastor/priest and school of the theology attended with the relevant qualifications; licensing.
v) Regional branches within the nation’s ten (10) Administrative Regions. With the “sign of the times’ by way of biblical prophecy being fore told we are in the last days. For many shall come to deceive many, but are wolves in sheep clothing; claiming to be of Christ, but are not. Woe be unto the pastors that lead my sheep astray”.
That after recently celebrating 50 years of Independence, with a national day of prayers/inter-faith service being one of the events, whether it was cosmetic or meaningful, at the end of the rainbow, the Christian Churches must as an obligating factor, rise and take its stance again, being led by a resuscitated Guyana Council of Churches, with a unified voice promoting the virtues of the Almighty and Heavenly Father, through his only Begotten Son, Jesus the Christ. Lest we awake one morning, to hear one of the religious zealots/false prophets proclaiming himself as, “the manifestation of the Second Coming of the Christ”.
With the term “Pope” being associated with Catholicism, many centuries ago, as a matter of fact.
“His Holiness” is also another attachment. As a consequence can it be construed to be an act of “copyright violation” to utilize the term by another person, from outside of Catholicism? Interestingly, in the dispensation of “national justice” would an injunction be filed in the High Court, nullifying the use of term “Pope”? Apart from being historical, religiously it would be justifiable, since the centuries old traditions are observed in the Vatican, in choosing a Pope. Nevertheless, salutations are in order to Pastors: Heywood, Massiah, McGowan and Smith towards utilizing continuously the term “Pastor”.
