Yvonne Murray’s reign came to an end when several scrabble players convened at her Nandy Park EBD residence to contest their monthly tournament among several players last Sunday evening.

From one Murray to the next: Carlton happily collects the winning trophy from his predecessor, Yvonne
However, the championship trophy remained at her residence as it was her husband, Carlton, who turned in a magnificent display to capture the trophy after amassing 4 points with a positive spread of 359.
Indeed, Carlton dug deep after surrendering his inaugural game to Maurice Munru by a slim spread of 7. He made amend in the second game after defeating veteran player, Ulric Harris (25) before avenging several previous losses to Yvonne with a crunching win by a comfortable spread of 65.
Ruby Cummings fared no better and surrendered by a spread of 96 before Murray capped off his performance with a crunching victory over Michael Benjamin by a spread of 180. The players will continue the rivalry when they convene at the same venue next month end.
Meanwhile, those players will join with other top seeds in another tournament when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) stages the Insurance Brokers Guyana Ltd open scrabble tournament at the Herdmanston Lodge, Queenstown, Sunday June 26. Abigail McDonald had won the national championships when the GASP last held that tournament a few years ago. However, Kaieteur Sport has been reliably informed that she has since migrated to the United States of America. Notwithstanding, keen rivalry is anticipated from former National Champion, Fred Collins, Moen Gafoor and James Krakowsky among others. The females will also vie for championship honours and names such as Yvonne Murray (who won the just concluded GASP Intermediate Championship), Grace Carter and Ruby Cummings among others will enter the tournament with high ambitions.
The registration period commences at 09:30hrs and clocks will be started at 10:15hrs. Those members with boards and clocks are asked to bring them along to facilitate an anticipated large turnout.
An admission fee of $500 will be collected during the registration period and participants are urged to arrive at the venue early enough to conform to this prerequisite.
There will be six games played with a break for lunch after the first three games and players will vie for trophies donated by Insurance Brokers Guyana Ltd. The first three finishers will win prizes as well as the player forming the most bingos.
The organizers are also inviting young, interested players to come and experience the feel of competitive scrabble.
