Learning Channel to host programmes for hinterland communities

There have been many complaints emanating from the hinterland communities about the lack of public information programmes which are aired on the Learning Channel. To remedy this information deficit, an agreement was recently made between Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, Minister of Education Dr. Rupert Roopnarine and Dr. Sita Roth, The Learning Channel Coordinator.
According to a statement, the agreement will provide air time during non-primetime, late night, hours during weekdays and on midday and afternoon hours at weekends.
It is expected that Public information and reports regarding work done by the Legislature, Judiciary and Executive will be communicated to hinterland residents.
The change to the channel’s programming will reportedly not affect the channel’s core educational programming designed for children.
“During weekdays, the late night timeslot is after traditional bedtime hours for children. At the weekends, many children are engaged in sports and recreational activities during the day and early evening” the statement said.
The new timeslots represent seven percent of the total weekly programming of the channel. Programmmes of national interest such as His Excellency President David Granger’s weekly Public Interest television programme and the Government Information Agency’s magazine together with other similar programmes will be broadcast over the station’s frequency. The channel currently broadcasts to 16 locations via satellite.
The agreed time-slots are 22:30 hours to midnight on weekdays and 12:00 hours to 13:00 hours and 18:30 hours to 19:30 hours on weekends.
The move has been dubbed as an effort geared at protecting the right of individuals to the access of information. Since the Office of the Prime Minister has the portfolio for information headed the successful negotiation process.
