Allied Arts, was held at the Bush Lot Primary School/Latchmansingh Primary School, Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice.
A department within the Ministry of Education, the Unit of Allied Arts is tasked with
the responsibility of coordinating and integrating the expressive arts of drama, physical education, dance, music, and visual arts in the school system of Guyana.
It is expected that by the end of the workshop teachers would be better able to promote the integration of expressive arts and the other subjects of the curriculum.
Throughout the workshop the participants would have looked at enhancing literacy through drama, elements of drama, aspects of storytelling, requirements for a good production, elements of staging a primary school production and guidelines for writing dramatic poetry.
Drama coordinator, Mrs. Lorraine Barker-King, stated that it is important that discipline be vibrant at the primary level to facilitate continuity, since the child would have been provided with a rich experience at the nursery level.
Music, while being a primary source of entertainment, can have profound sociological impact on culture, and research has shown that music can have a significant impact on the development of the Region Five teachers to participate in Allied Arts Workshop
A number of Primary School teachers from throughout Region Five began a two-day workshop on drama methodology on Thursday.
The Unit of Allied Arts is promoting the introduction of the expressive arts program at an early age with the firm belief that the integration of arts education gives support to the rest of the curriculum, and provides a balance for the development of the total human potential.
The authorities state that the benefits to be derived from the expressive arts programme are numerous, and that these benefits contribute significantly to the intellectual, physical, social, emotional, and moral development of the young child.
Similar workshops have been held in Regions Two, Ten, Four and Six.
