A route 42 minibus passenger who was recently caught by police with an unlicensed gun was yesterday remanded to prison, after he made an appearance before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Thirty-year-old Steve Anthony Ramdass of Lot 248 Section B Block ‘X’, Great Diamond, East Bank Demerara allegedly had a .32 Walther pistol in his possession on June 5, at Providence, East Bank Demerara when he was not the holder of a firearm licence.
It was further alleged that on the same day he had eight .32 rounds of ammunition in his possession.
Ramdass who was employed as a handyman/driver at Avinash Scrap Metal Dealership pleaded not guilty to the charge.
He was represented by Attorney Mark Conway who stated that his client has no pending or previous matters before the court.
Police Prosecutor, Inspector Neville Jeffers objected to bail for the defendant. The prosecutor pointed out that no special reasons were raised by the lawyer. He explained that Ramdass was intercepted in a bus and searched, during which he was found with an unlicensed gun and matching ammunition.
The Prosecutor pointed out that the gun was found tucked in Ramdass’ pants waist.
The Chief Magistrate upheld the Prosecutor’s objection and remanded the defendant to prison until June 29, when he will appear in the Providence Magistrate’s Court.
