Dear Editor,
As early as 5:15 am the line of persons traveling on Caribbean Airlines on Wednesday 1st June was stretching towards the entrance of the waiting area. I was in line as I was going to the Capital Jazz Fest in Maryland USA. It surprised me that for this crowd, Caribbean Airlines only had two counter clerks on duty. As the line just inched along, two young women who were obvious “combackies” for the fiftieth anniversary, regaled us as loudly as they could about the slothfulness of us, Guyanese.
Nothing seemed to change, they claimed, and of course their vow never to return to this country again. In the mean time the female immigration officer on duty decided to check the baggage of a man in the line. I could tell from his demeanor that he resented this intrusion. He nonchalantly stood aside while she completed her search, (which of course is her job) after which she told him to rejoin the line at a different place than when she took him out. Well that was it; he started to berate her with the ugliest of words and loudly. There was no security around, she just stood there and incurred his blasphemy. This was immediately followed by another man running back and forth up the aisle, screaming that his suitcases were overweight the first time, and he reduced it, the second time it was still over weight and now a third time. I thought that the counter clerk was going to be punched, so irate was the man. The funny part of all of this to me was that, the flight left on time we arrived in Trinidad on time, and I saw most of these same people on the connecting flight to the US. I know for a fact that type of behavior would have gotten them thrown off of any flight originating in the US.
