After deadly pirate attack, Guyana and Suriname intensify cooperation

The police forces in Guyana and Suriname have vowed to intensify their collaborative efforts and cooperate more in various activities which are of mutual interest to both countries.
Recently a delegation from the Suriname Police Force visited Guyana and held wide ranging discussions with members of the ‘B’ Division of the Guyana Police Force.
Commander of the Division, Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam led his delegation which included Deputy Commander Senior Superintendent, Errol Watts, and a few ranks from the Criminal Investigation Department.
According to Amsterdam, most of the ranks in the Suriname delegation were involved in the joint river search for the missing fishermen who were attacked between Friday 27th and Saturday 28th May while fishing in the Corentyne River.
While the captain managed to survive, one man was found dead trapped in a net. Three others remain missing.
Five persons were remanded on murder charges on Friday.
According to Amsterdam, during the search for the missing fishermen, the Guyana Police Force received full cooperation from their counterparts from Suriname.
He said that a decision was also taken to share intelligence in a number of areas, including sharing information on wanted persons who may be hiding out or incarcerated in both countries.
