Dear Editor,
I refer to Jermain Hermanstyne’s letter “Don’t rush to judge Minister Harmon,” KN, June 4. Mr Hermanstyne
claims to be a first time writer as if that appeal to your good heart would entitle him to publication. Really? His letter was obviously one to push support for Joe Harmon, but be that as it may, Mr Hermanstyne’s letter is fraught with inaccuracies:
1. He has clearly not read all the letters and reports of Joe Harmon’s odyssey and the apparent missteps
2. Is Mr Hermanstyne not aware that Joe Harmon baulked at holding a press conference and instead opted to issue a release through the government’s official organ?
3. Is Mr Hermanstyne not aware that President Granger was crowded in public by the Press and adroitly answered some questions the reporters put to him on the Harmon fiasco?
4. Mr Hermanstyne proceeds to make some nebulous reference to natural justice, obviously not fully aware nor understanding what that means. Natural justice does not apply where the acts done were inexplicable as they appear to be well beyond the scope of assigned power and responsibility. But that is beyond the grasp of Mr Hermanstyne as he is clearly trying to add a pleading voice for forgiving fatal errors.
5. Does Mr Hermanstyne know what is meant by ‘the preponderance of evidence’, but he chooses to ignore this and rallies his support with trite remarks of “because the information has still yet not been revealed to the public by way of press Conference or a personal interview.” What poppycock is this?
6. Mr Hermanstyne believes that “our Ministers are likely to err or fall short at times”, but not so Joe Harmon, an obvious personal interest in Joe Harmon for his infallibility and as is customary where support is blinded, there is an appeal for unity to build rather than divide. The logic in this defies sensibility as it seems to imply that serious missteps are to be ignored as being divisive.
Mister Editor, I appeal to you to let the Harmon issue die.
Harmon I suspect, has already been scolded and will toe the line, so let the matter no longer be part of your publication save and except if he again missteps for then there will be a resurrection. I have suggested that he be posted to Toronto as our Consulate Officer for we do need a competent one. He would be the right man for this job. We have a lot of ex-police men, and ex-soldiers to keep him company.Let Harmon’s missteps RIP.
