Dear Editor,
This time the feisty elderly citizen was irrepressible. He stood in my way and, as if, contradictorily, it was I who was blocking his path–his emaciated hands akimbo of body too frail to project the defiance he obviously intended.
Then he spluttered questions in a way that indicated they did not require answers.
What do you mean by ‘Coalition’?
Where are the signs, the symbols? Is it the Jaguar?
Did we have a Jaguar at Independence?
Or was it a flag–Burnham’s Golden Arrow?
It was such a rush. He just would not wait for a response. So where is Burnham-who led this country into Independence? (Do the young generations know what he looked like; how handsome he was?) The citizen simply refused to be interrupted! Do they know about him and Jagan who was also there at Independence? Another handsome man! Where is he?
Where is the image of coalition? Should it not be Burnham and Jagan? However, hopelessly, he again cut short any response. Shrugging his narrow shoulders, he limped past, shaking his head questioningly: Where is the coalition? E.B. John
