Many families have treasured items and keepsakes that have been passed on for generations. For some it’s their grandmother’s pearls or their mother’s wedding ring and even photographs dating back to earlier generations.
But for Michael Bobb -Semple and his family it is a shirt which was purchased on May 26, 1966, the same day Guyana gained Independence.
Michael Bobb -Semple , a Trinidad-based Guyanese whose father, Alan Bobb -Semple purchased the shirt in 1966 and has been wearing it every single Independence Day since.
“He would take it out, wear it wash and place it back into the wardrobe.” He said that his dad repeated this ritual until he died in 2014. What amazes him, however, is the condition of the shirt that has been around for 50 years.
“He was 96 years old when he passed.” Bobb Semple said. Given its significance, Bobb- Semple said he thought it would be nice to share the story with his fellow Guyanese.
Since Guyana is celebrating the 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations. I really thought it would be nice to share the story in memory of my father.
