A grieving family was yesterday shocked to be presented with the wrong body in a coffin, instead of that of their loved one.
Bereaved family members of a woman, who passed away sometime back, turned up at a West Coast Demerara (WCD) funeral parlour to remove her body and transport it to its final resting place only to discover that the corpse that was presented to them is not their relative.
It was then revealed to them that there was a little mix-up and that the body which was handed over to them is a destitute named “Rosie,” who lived at La Jalousie, West Coast Demerara (WCD).
Kaieteur News understands that the body of their relative was on Saturday unwittingly given to “Rosie’s” neighbours who had pooled money to give her a proper send off.
That body was buried on Saturday and no one raised any alarm.
But yesterday, relatives of the other woman went to the funeral parlour and were horrified that the body that was being presented to them was that of a total stranger who looked nothing like their deceased loved one.
They soon learnt that their loved one’s remains were already interred in the Blankenburg cemetery.
Angered by the mix up, the family went to the cemetery at around 07:00 hrs yesterday and after identifying the tomb, they broke it and removed their loved one’s remains.
“Rosie” body is still lying at the parlour.
A concerned resident explained that after “Rosie” passed away, he along with other neighbours pooled money and assisted in arranging a simple funeral for the woman which took place on Saturday.
The man, who said that the parlour was paid $140,000, said he was shocked to hear from the parlour yesterday that “Rosie’s” body was still there.
“They should bury her because it is their mistake. I paid to build the tomb and they break it up,” the man said.
He said that residents are upset over what transpired.
Meanwhile, the owner of the funeral home when contacted yesterday gave a completely different explanation.
He said that it is not a case where the wrong corpse was delivered.
He explained that two set of relatives are fighting over the woman’s body. “They break the tomb because they wanted to know if the parlour thief her jewelry or if it was buried with her.”
