The Alliance For Change (AFC) last evening sent out a statement confirming that at a statutory Management
Committee meeting the Party held yesterday, its Chairman Nigel Hughes “made an announcement with regard to his Chairmanship of the party.”
AFC leader said that Party Leader Khemraj Ramjattan, who was present at the meeting, subsequently spoke with Hughes and a meeting is arranged for today.
AFC further stated, “The party confirms unequivocally that the statement issued on April 10th following its leadership retreat was a one which was unanimously approved by the attendees of the leadership retreat. The party will make no further statement on this matter at this time.” AFC Leader Khemraj Ramjattan and Executive Member Raphael Trotman were not at Sunday’s meeting.
This is about the third time Hughes offered his resignation.
Kaieteur News understands that Hughes resignation has to do with the ongoing controversy involving Minister of State Joseph Harmon. Hughes is reportedly against the Party supporting Harmon at a time when he seems to be wrapped in corrupt practices.
On Sunday, following a retreat, AFC issued a statement which indicated the Party’s view is that too much power has been given to Harmon.
AFC said that the state stands to benefit more if some of the responsibilities that have been in Harmon’s hands are reassigned.
AFC also called for the completion of the Code of Conduct and for it to be enforced.
Efforts to contact Hughes proved futile.
