Four Venezuelan nationals were yesterday brought before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan to answer a charge of simple larceny, when they appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Rolex Williams, 17; Reon DeSantos,20; Tony Rampersaud,20 and Scarlet Gonzalez, 21, all residing in Venezuela, were accused of stealing a 175 hp Yamaha engine foot valued at $580,000—property of Daniel McKenzie. The incident occurred on March 31, at Eteringbang Landing, Cuyuni River.
Williams, DeSantos and Rampersaud, all goldminers, pleaded guilty to the allegation after it was read to them. Gonzalez pleaded not guilty through the aid of a Spanish interpreter.
After admitting to the offence, the Magistrate ordered the trio to pay a fine of $30,000 each. Failure to pay the sum will see them spending eight months in jail.
The case against Gonzalez was subsequently dismissed after Rampersaud told the court that the woman had no knowledge that the item was stolen.
In mitigation, Rampersaud told the Magistrate that he stole the article because he was going through some “hard times”. He said that he came to Guyana, stole the article and went back over to his homeland.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones told the court that the complainant is a businessman. He said that McKenzie secured his engine and later discovered that it was missing.
Jones stated that the police acting on information arrested Williams, DeSantos and Rampersaud. The prosecutor told the court that the men admitted to stealing the engine foot.
According to Jones, they took police to a hotel room that was occupied by Gonzalez where the stolen item was recovered. He added that police took possession of the item and later arrested and charged the Venezuelans.
