A 48-year-old man accused of slapping his cousin during an argument was yesterday ordered to complete 200 hours community service when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates Courts.
Gordon Cummings of Bent Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown, admitted to the charge that on March 31 at Croal Street, Georgetown, he unlawfully assaulted his cousin, Eon Wilson.
Court heard that at 18:10 hours on the day in question, the defendant and the virtual complainant were at the Route 48 bus park in Georgetown when a misunderstanding occurred. Prosecutor Michael Grant said that Wilson tried to make peace but the defendant refused to concede and instead dealt him two slaps to the right side of his face. The altercation was subsequently reported to the Mobile Police Outpost, and after investigations, the defendant was arrested and charged.
Magistrate Dylan Bess then asked the defendant if he had anything to say and he declined to offer any comment. He then demanded that Cummings make his apology to the virtual complainant in the court’s presence.
“What you did was wrong; you do not slap a person who is trying to make peace.” Cummings’ apology was later accepted. He was ordered to complete 200 hours community service at the National Park and the Palms before April 30. If he fails to do so, Cummings will be sentenced to six months in prison.
