Dear Editor,
It is my desire to inform the public and higher authorities to take action in resolving an issue I have been ached with for too long. My beef is with the time the training takes to complete, misinformation given by the school and the shabby certificate a youth is given at the completion of his training. In 2013 my son commenced training at the Corriverton Technical Institute for an entire week. He was told of how beautiful his training would be and how valuable and powerful the certificate would be in the future especially in his case where it was his desirous of working in the Caribbean islands. The impression given to him at that time made him think that achieving the certificate would be the key to his work worries.
Every student in his class was told the same; they were further told that they would not fail and that they would finish at the end of the year. After the year it was found that my son could not have completed the training. I blamed no one but my son. I blamed him for poor commitment and interest. I then decided to allow him to complete the program because I was assured it would only take a couple of months; the school kept a meeting and assured us of this. This meeting happened at the school late 2014. Almost the entire school of students for that year was asked to attend the meeting. I found out it turned out to be for more than six months and he was not making much progress from my observation so I encouraged him to just simply find a job where he would be paid to learn. So he did and was working.
After a long while more than half a year, parents and students were again asked to attend another meeting for the same reason of completing the training. In excitement after another false reassurance, again I yet again encouraged my son to quit his job and complete his training since we were assured that the certificate that would be awarded will be recognized and accepted anywhere in CARICOM and that it is very authentic and is awarded by CARICOM. He finally completed in 2015 and graduated in November of 2015.
We were informed during the graduation arrangement to collect his certificate in December which did not happen. He finally got his certificate at the ending of January and to his disappointment found out that it was the same cheap ,unrecognized certificated the school usually prints themselves and over the past few years
Because of this it has caused me to fail my child as a parent. I have wasted precious years of my child’s life and now I am certain that my child has lost trust and faith in me. A figure in whom a child is supposed to have undying and total trust and faith. I have also invested a lot of my income to ensure that my child completed his training. Entrance fees for this school is also probably the worst in Berbice. Since my son has uplifted his not so useful certificate, he has been calling and visiting the school in the hope that he would be given some reassuring news about the certificate he was told, assured and trained to acquire but after his numerous tries he was finally informed again that he would have to return to the school to train again to acquire that certificate he desires. Mr. Editor I plead to someone in the position to remedy this grave situation so that no other – parent or child suffers.
