It is heartening to note that a large number of former students of Berbice High School (BHS)have banned themselves together to provide much needed facilities for their alma matar as the top school celebrates its 100th anniversary in September. A packed programme has been arranged between August 31 and September 5 in which a wide range of activities are planned and hundreds of former in the diaspora from as far as Australia, London, the United States, Canada and other parts of the planet will attend. Sir Shridath Ramphal former student who served as Commonwealth Secretary General for three terms and President David Granger will attend the ceremony on September 5.
The old students have drawn up a wish list to supply the needs of the school in each department including mathematics, science, home economics, theatre art, business department, industrial technology as well as all the classrooms. The Singh brothers, Dr. Tulsi Singh, Dr. Puran Singh, Muneshwar, Chhatrapal, Lalbahadur and Mohan, have already shipped 500 chairs to the school.
Among the activities planned are: cultural extravaganza, exhibition of arts and literary publications of alumni, sporting activities, workshop, dinner and dance, and several other activities.
BHS has produced hundreds of outstanding professionals in several fields including university presidents, professors, scientists, doctors, lawyers, and in several other fields. The names of a few who have excelled will be announced during the week long ceremony.
Chairman of the organizing committee is Dr. Grantley Waldrond with Avinash Bhagwandin as Secretary. The theme of the committee is “seizing the opportunity to train and build a cohesive society”
