Contractor/Businessman, Brian ‘BK’ Tiwarie, has been named as a Business Advisor to Government.
The appointment was made on January 19th by Minister of State, Joseph Harmon.
According to the Instrument of Appointment signed by the Minister, Tiwarie is appointed the Ministerial Advisor on Business Development.
Under the previous PPP/C administration, Tiwarie was able to become one of the most powerful contractors involved in some of the biggest projects, including the stalled East Bank Demerara four-lane extension project.
He is one of the main contractors on the West Coast Demerara Road Improvement Project and was involved in the construction of the troubled Supenaam Ferry Wharf, Essequibo.
In addition to contracts, Tiwarie has spread his tentacles to the aviation, mining and quarrying businesses.
His foray into the housing sector, however, has landed him in trouble with recent revelations that he sold 100 acres of lands to a Chinese logger Chu Hongbo.
According to court documents on the case filed earlier this year, Tiwarie, through his company, Sunset Lakes, acquired the Providence lands in April 2014 for $471M. He paid down just over $117M.
Eight weeks later, he sold the entire plot for US$8M ($1.6B). After Chu Hongbo, the buyer, failed to pay off $4M by April last year, Tiwarie filed a court action asking for the land to be taken back.
The businessman, who was close to the previous administration, became close with the new Government shortly after President David Granger was sworn in last May.
He was involved in the cleanup of Brickdam.
