Dear Editor,
The letter Of March 20th 2016 “The Education Ministry has a favorite printer”
was not a startling one as it speaks to reality. As much as I am a supporter of the government and have welcomed the refreshing change in my country, the fact is that some old customs die hard.
Favoritism and partiality are intrinsic parts of any government, as generally, they tend to trust those who support them. However, the Granger government must be acutely aware of being labeled as more of the same – the government has changed but the unfair tendering practices remain.
Now I would like to add my concern about the very Ministry of Education which it is rumored recently changed the qualifying requirements to award a catering contract to a party faithful – with no catering establishment. It has been said time and time, over and over that Guyana is a small country where very few secrets are ever secrets. Guyanese like to talk and worst of all boast when they strike it good in any activity.
The past government was not afraid to award contracts in openly blatant favoritism. That should not be a part of this government. More of the same is not good enough. All tendering processes should be clear and transparent. Contracts should be awarded to the most qualified with a demonstrated track record of competence. And perhaps more importantly, once rules are established they should not be changed to accommodate favorites. Mrs. June Veecock
