Dear Editor,
Each time I read of another City Councillor indicating an interest or desire to run for another term there at City Hall, it sickens me and makes me wonder why? Is it such a gravy train that these old boys and girls do not want leave? Or do these people have no where else to go? And Nothing else to do? Did they not hear the Mayor recommend that the next Mayor and Councillors should be young and energetic persons? The present bunch of Councillors are all abysmal failures.
The latest person to signal his plan to do so is Junior Garrett from Campbellville. The person who under his watch saw the Council purchasing millions of dollars in computer equipment from a certain place in Grove on the East Bank of Demerara. This is the person who led an argument to have Councillors receive pensions and gratuity even though they were not salaried employees, and which would have further milked the City’s coffers.
This is the person that presented many deficit budgets until he was removed from the position as Chairman by his staunchest colleagues from his own political party in August of 2014, when they passed a no-confidence motion against him claiming that he had failed the council and was irresponsible when it came to spending. That motion was moved by Councilor Ranwell Jordan and seconded by Deputy Mayor Patricia Chase Greene.
This present Council has made a mess of our capital City. This present Council has allowed for corruption and nepotism with relatives of councillors working at the Council. It is time for Georgetown to close chapter in Guyana’s politics. We need to move forward not backward. His party’s slogan is ‘It is Time’. I believe it is time for him to step away and give the younger generation a chance. I believe it is time for him to serve his community in a different way. Riley Matthews
