Dear Editor,
This company has been observing the Labour laws of this country and the rights of its workers.
1. The Guyana Labour Union is the bargaining agent for all non-management workers, over the last five years management has refused to deduct union dues from workers and took off many workers from the pay roll.
2. Despite several pleads by the Union to address workers issues, management totally ignored the Union.
3. Prior to last year July the Ministry of Labour failed to act or intervene. Despite several complaints made by workers.
4. Last August the then Minister of Social Protection (Labour) summoned senior officials from the company including the Managing Director to a meeting, this was after the company got involved in a pay dispute with the workers of the Linden Sawmills in relation to severance pay. (Those workers were laid off since 2011).
5. The top officials refused to attend the meeting, they however send some second tier Managers. The Minister refused to meet with them and instructed the Chief Labour Officer to take appropriate steps.
6. Somehow, things worked out and the Managing Director was able to have a meeting with the Minister and the situation came down to handshakes, smiles and some bright promises. In spite of a commitment given to the Minister that all payments will be made by December 31, 2015, some of the workers are still to be paid.
7. Over the past six months workers have been receiving their salaries very late, one – two weeks into the new month with no explanation.
8. The Chinese have no respect for the Guyanese workers, in fact they boldly told the Guyanese that it is the Chinese money and the company is owned by them and they are doing us a favour by employing us.
9. No Guyanese national event is celebrated by the company for the Guyanese but for the Chinese Spring Festival huge sums of money is being spent to buy exquisite meat, food and drinks.
There are much more than this that is taking place at this company. I do hope that something would be done to bring relief to the workers at BAI SHAN LIN INTERNATIONAL FOREST DEVELOPMENT INC. Concerned employee (name supplied)
