Concerned about democracy being lost
Dear Editor,
I refer to the Stabroek News article of January 14, with the headline “NICIL’s Deputy Head complaints to cops of being shadowed by unknown persons.” I am appalled and concerned that this is the state of my beloved Guyana. Is Mrs. Nadir- Sharma a risk to national security or a criminal whose activities needs close monitoring? Guyana is a signatory to the international Declaration on Human rights which prescribes to the belief that a person is innocent until proven guilty. As a citizen of Guyana, I join the call of the Guyana Bar Association and civil society for government to offer an explanation for these recent activities: why is Mrs. Nadir-Sharma being shadowed and Mr. Brassington’s family being surveyed?
The days for secret police and the use of the army to conduct sinister activities can no longer be condoned. Too many have died fighting for democracy for Guyana. Let us not allow a few blinded by power and malice to take it from us under the cloak of “security”. All law abiding citizens who believe in the spirit of democracy and the development of our beloved Guyana must demand that our government explain its actions NOW, should they seek our support again in 2020.
