Dear Editor,
Please refer to a headline M&CC Deny Garbage Disposal in Le Repentir, published in one of the other newspapers recently. The content of the article and pictures posted, suggests that Council is either disposing of refuse or permitting the disposal of household and commercial waste in the Le Repentir Cemetery. It is pellucid that the aim and intention of this article is not only to mislead and deceive the citizens, but is also a calculated attempt to stir up strive in the communities contiguous to the cemetery.
The skip bin that was displayed in the article suggested that the Council was empting garbage in the cemetery. The content of the skip was from weeding and cleaning of the cemetery done by the contractor who was assigned to clean the cemetery. All contractors, who are employed by the Municipality to clean drains or in this case the Le Repentir Cemetery are required to provide skip bins to accommodate refuse, debris or silt, this is outlined in their contractual agreement with the Municipality.
The picture of the truck that was shown, was indeed disposing sludge taken from the canals and not household refuse. Recently, Haags Bosch landfill site was inaccessible and the Council had dug out an area in the cemetery to disposal of refuse, this was halted. The same area that was excavated to deposit garbage is currently being filled with sludge and would be covered with loam or sand. Citizens are interested in the truth about issues, events and phenomena that are occurring in the local communities in which they live. Therefore, the media has a social responsibility to present the truth to its audience and not misrepresent facts.
It is also, important that ethical values such as; truth, accuracy, objectivity are employed when presenting information to the public.
