Two men were yesterday remanded to prison after being jointly slapped with a charge of break and enter and larceny, when they appeared before the Chief Magistrate in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The men, Denzil Mathias, 24, and Martin Nurse, 18, both of Block X Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, are accused of breaking into the dwelling house of Ashelia Persaud and stealing a quantity of items. It is alleged that the men stole two laptops, a quantity of gold jewellery, a quantity of clothing among other items-all carrying a total of over $1M belonging to Persaud.
Mathias and Nurse pleaded not guilty to the charge and will return to court on January 18. This matter was transferred to the Providence Magistrate’s Court.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Kerry Bostwick objected to bail for the duo, after citing the seriousness of the offence. He pointed out that the articles were recovered in the men’s possession after they were apprehended by the police.
The prosecutor noted that the defendants admitting to committing the crime. Magistrate Ann McLennan upheld these objections and remanded them to prison.
