Another St. Lucian jailed for cocaine
– man claims he was forced to swallow 45 pellets
Within the past week, two female St. Lucians were jailed for a total of 98 months for cocaine concealed in their vaginas in dildo-shaped packages. Yesterday, another native of the island was jailed for three years after claiming he was forced to swallow 45 pellets containing the illicit substance.
Twenty six-year-old, Kendall Joseph was brought before City Magistrate Fabayo Azore to answer a charge of trafficking in narcotics. Joseph admitted that between November 22 and 24 at Woodlands Hospital in Georgetown, he had 480 grams of cocaine in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Joseph was jailed for three years and ordered to pay a fine of $1,296,000—three times the street value of the drug, when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The man had no legal representation and told the court that he was forced to ingest the pellets.
Police Corporal Bharrat Mangru presented the prosecution’s case on behalf of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU). The prosecutor told the court that Joseph is a St. Lucian national, who came to Guyana for a job. Mangru said that on November 21, the defendant was an outgoing passenger on Caribbean Airlines (CAL) flight BW460 destined for London, England.
Mangru related that the man was approached by CANU ranks, after he was observed acting in a suspicious manner. Joseph was questioned and based on his responses, the ranks arrested him and took him to the Woodlands Hospital.
According to the prosecutor, an x-ray was conducted on his abdominal area and several foreign objects were seen. Mangru pointed out that the man was admitted a patient at the said hospital and later excreted 45 pellets containing cocaine.
As a result, the St. Lucian was arrested and taken to CANU headquarters, where he admitted to swallowing the cocaine pellets.
In mitigation, Joseph told the Magistrate that it was his first time in Guyana and he has a child.
