A taxi driver yesterday struck a six –year-old Primary schoolboy of La Parfaite Harmonie and flung him some distance from the point of impact, before driving over and crushing him to death.
The accident occurred a little after 07:30 hrs on the Westminster access road in the vicinity of Four Corners junction.
The taxi, bearing registration PRR 9325, only came to a stop when it ended up in a nearby trench at La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara (WBD).
The dead child has been identified as Keith Adams, a Grade One student of Linden and La Parfaite Harmonie. He was pronounced dead at the West Demerara Regional Hospital.
According to reports, Adams was heading to school with a neighbour, when the driver of the car allegedly lost control of the vehicle and struck the lad from behind.
Eyewitnesses recalled seeing the six-year-old boy “flying in the air” before landing onto the road.
“When this li’l boy fall back on the road, the car drive over and crushed him, then the driver ended up into the trench straight under the people bridge,” the eyewitness explained.
Meanwhile, a woman who operates a confectionery stall nearby said that she saw the car approaching and from all appearances the driver was not in total control.
“I just see the car swerving all over the place and I thought that is some drunk man been at the wheel,” she related. She added that she moved to safety and shortly afterwards the vehicle sped past and collided with the child before coming to a stop in the trench.
“I barely move out the way or I might have been hit,” said the woman.
The driver of the car has been identified as 37-year-old Junior Dey. He is in police custody assisting with investigations.
Kaieteur News was told that the driver was proceeding south along the eastern side of the Westminster access road and the six-year-old child was walking on the right hand side of the same road, heading in the same direction.
The driver was allegedly going at a fast rate when he lost control of the vehicle and struck the child.
Adams was flung in the air after which the driver drove over his body. The car only came to a stop when it ended up in a nearby trench.
This newspaper understands that Adams and an older brother were soon to be adopted.
“His mother is living in Linden but because of certain situations, she brings the children here for me to keep because my friend from New York will be adopting Adams and his brother,” Holly Caesar said while adding that her friend is now trying to complete the paper work.
At the time of the accident, little Adams was heading to school with a neighbour, Alisha Boston.
“In the mornings, I would normally take him to school because my two children go to the same school and one of my daughters is in his class,” a shaken Boston recalled.
She explained that she was walking on the outer side of the road while her two daughters and Adams were walking in the corner.
“I don’t know how it happened but this car came from behind and hit Keith and he pitched and then the car drove over him,” the woman recalled. She said that the car miraculously missed her and her two children
According to the devastated woman, the driver and four occupants who were in the car, escaped unhurt.
Adams was killed at a time when the country is observing road safety month.
