…businessman, staff abandon operation
Thousands of gallons of illegal fuel were seized when the Guyana Energy Agency swooped down on a Mahaica property, on Monday.
The operation that was carried out on Monday by the Guyana Revenue Authority anti smuggling section and marine operations unit which swooped down the property at Mahaica Old Road. Harrilall Motilall aka Ginga Harry owns the property.
While no one can point any fingers, according to sources close to the investigation, the property owner apparently got wind of the impending operation before it happened and fled the location. His staff did likewise.
The source said that efforts were made to dump the illegal fuel because when officers arrived at the location they found fuel being pumped from one of the tanks into the Mahaica Creek.
The location was secured by heavily armed Law Enforcement Officers until Guyana Energy Agency technicians arrived at the location. The entire operation was based on a tipoff.
According to reports from officials of the GEA, the property is fortified with concrete fencing and steel doors that are more than 20 feet high.
After the team eventually gained entry, field tests were conducted by GEA and it was found that the fuel in the tanks did not meet the marking requirements and as such the fuel was deemed illegal.
In the end thousands of gallons of fuel and other apparatus used for fuel were seized by the GRA Law Enforcement Officers.
Harrilall Motilall of Mahaica was charged in 2014 for shooting at Law Enforcement Officers.
