The bus driver responsible for the death of re-migrant cyclist, Roy Albert Mendonca, will be spending the next 54 months in jail. He was found guilty on a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.
Sookraj Permaul, 26, was convicted yesterday by City Magistrate Fabayo Azore, in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Permaul had initially denied that on April 2, last year on Carifesta Avenue, Georgetown, he drove in a manner dangerous to the public while piloting motor bus BNN 6492, thereby causing the death of Mendonca.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Stephen Telford, presented the prosecution’s case. Telford called a number of witnesses to testify during the year long trial. These consisted of police and civilians.
According to reports, Mendonca, who had received an award for being the top ‘over 60’ rider, was riding west along Carifesta on the morning of the day in question. Permaul was travelling east along the said roadway and attempted to overtake a few vehicles, when he struck Mendonca.
Following the head-on collision with the minibus, the 67-year-old, who resided at Lot 281 Forshaw Street, Queenstown, was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he was pronounced dead.
The convict made his first court appearance before Magistrate Ann McLennan and was not required to plead to the charge. Before his sentencing Permaul was released on $800,000 bail.
