Played in the spirit and camaraderie that was befitting of the ‘gentleman’s game’, Guyana Media XI and Speed XI engaged each in other a rather fiercely competitive friendly softball match on Wednesday evening at the world famous GCC ground, Bourda.
When the dust was settled and the floodlight towers were switched off, the result column on the scorebook read: Speed XI won by five wickets.
The outcome was due largely to an outstanding all-round performance from businessman Kamal Seebarran, who ripped through the Media XI’s middle-order, before returning to score a solid 30.
Bowling some juicy ‘round-arm’ deliveries, Seebarran lured many of the opposition batsmen to go aerial, and while most of them got elevation, the distance did not bring the desired result.
The experienced softball player also used the heavy grass surface effectively, spinning his way to figures of 4-30 off four overs, as the Media XI elected to bat upon winning the toss, managing 171 off 19.4 of the allotted 25 overs.
Speed XI responded with 174-5 in 21.4 overs.
Opening the batting, Seebarran struck 30 (2x4s) to ignite the run-chase, while solid contributions came from Ramo Malone and former Magistrate Tagenarine Ramroop.
Opener Ramroop, who made 43 (3x4s, 2x6s), and Seebarran had given Speed XI a solid, but slow start as runs were hard to come by.
The Media XI bowlers were extremely miserly up front and were in the ascendancy for the better part of 15 overs.
Although he did not claim a wicket, debutant Shantanand Anude was the most impressive Media XI bowler, conceding just 22 runs from five overs.
With 43 required off seven overs, the match could have gone either way, but Malone sealed the deal by taking 17 runs off Shahrukh Imran in the 20th over.
Malone, who struck three sixes and three fours, ended on an even fifty, while Orlando Charles was unbeaten on 29 when victory was achieved. Imran claimed 2-26 from four overs.
Earlier, Media XI skipper John Ramsingh called correctly at the toss and immediately decided to take first strike.
Guest player Wallack Joseph and Ravi Persaud give the team a solid start, one which the middle and lower order failed to capitalise on.
Joseph made 46 (3x4s, 2x6s) and Persaud scored 28 (4x4s), while Ramsingh (19), Deeraj (17) and Avenash Ramzan (10) were the other batsmen to reach double figures.
At a presentation ceremony which followed, Seebarran was quite rightly named Man-of-the-Match, while Speed XI received a trophy for the win. The trophies were donated by the Trophy Stall, Derrick Auto Spares and Ray’s Auto Sales.
The two teams will meet again shortly.
