In a situation where one case is too many, the country is recording in excess of 300 cases of sexual abuse meted out to young children, both males and females, in just a few months.
This translates to more than one a day.
There has been a 65 percent increase in the number of reported cases of sexual offences from January to the end of August as compared to the same period last year.
Police statistics have shown that just within the month of July last, 36 reports of rape were made, taking the total up to 243 for the first seven months of this year. By August, the figure had climbed to 271.
The same period last year (January to August) reported 164 rape cases.
However, the Child Care and Protection Agency has in its possession, statistics showing 334 reported cases of child molestation from January to July.
And, all of these cases have been forwarded to the Guyana Police Force.
Head of the agency, Ann Greene, said that no child should be exposed to any form of sexual abuse.
“It robs children of their childhood. It robs them of the person they would have become.”
Greene explained that reports have shown that most of the young victims are between the ages of 14 and 18 years old. Kaieteur News was told that out of the 334 reported cases of sexual abuse, 286 of them are females and 48 are boys.
What is highly disturbing is the fact that most of the perpetrators are close relatives of the abused children.
“I have been doing this for a long time and I have not encountered a case where a child lied.
Children have recanted…they say that it didn’t happen because they are protecting the perpetrator… they love the perpetrator,” Greene said.
There have been a few sexual molestation cases passing through the courts.
Just this week, a 50-year-old father of 12, Linton Pompey, was sentenced to 37 years in prison for raping a minor in 2011.
And, two weeks ago, another father, Sean Trotman, was sentenced to 45 years in prison, after he was found guilty of two counts of rape in 2013.
The victim was a minor and she was said to be his relative. The Director for CCPA said that in cases where the perpetrator is placed before the court, it is a boost for the agency.
According to Ann Greene, a major challenge is getting the police to bring forth the sexual offences cases to the magistrate within the 72 hrs that the alleged perpetrator is in police custody.
