Dear Editor,
About a week and a half ago, I raised concerns about the extreme shortage of teachers in Leguan Primary Schools to the Minister of Education, Mr. Rupert Roopnarine.
On Monday the 14th September 2015, some officials came from the Regional Education Department in Region 3 and basically said that it was not within their power to employ teachers. Instead of immediately correcting this desperate situation that is costing children their education, the situation is taking a turn for the worse.
Today, it was brought to my attention by a concerned parent that the Success Primary School in Leguan was currently being run by the Headmistress of the Nursery School and the school cleaner. There were no teachers. Upon receiving this complaint, I called the Headmistress who then told me that the Regional Education Officer for Region 3 had given permission for the Headmistress of the Nursery to run the school and she was indeed doing so with just the help of the school cleaner.
Not only does this compromise the children’s education but also poses a very real threat to the health and safety of the children.
The Minister of Education, Mr. Rupert Roopnarine needs to do the job he is being paid to do and do so immediately, otherwise step aside and let someone capable of doing a better job take over.
The education of our children and their health and safety should always be the priority of any government. So, Mr. Rupert Roopnarine, what are you going to do? Dale Shaka Kalamazad
