PCL simulation game… Barnwell, Reifer hit fifties on day two

Chris Barnwell (67*) and Raymond Reifer (57*) shared in a century fifth wicket partnership at Bourda yesterday on day two of a three-day simulation match for the Guyana team preparing for the 2015/2016 WICB’s Professional Cricket League (PCL) Four-Day First Class Franchise which starts on November 6.
When rain stopped play a responsible unbeaten 45 from Skipper Vishaul Singh had led his team to 64-3 in reply to the 229 all out made by Assad Fudadin’s X1.
Barnwell, who began the day on 59, was kept on a tight rein by some quality fast bowling by Keon Joseph while the left-handed Reifer, who hit a patient 24 by the close on Tuesday, was more aggressive yesterday before both batsmen were asked to ‘retire out’.
Barnwell struck eight fours and a six in his well constructed innings while Reifer, one of two overseas players from Barbados in the Guyana Franchise, reached the boundary five times in a responsible half-century.
Resuming on their overnight score of 157-4, Fudadin’s X1 added 72 runs to their total as left-arm spinner Anthony Adams captured 4-37 from 9.3overs.
Singh’s X1 started their reply in horrendous fashion when Test opener Rajendra Chandrika was bowled for a second ball duck when he got an inside edge to a full ball from pacer Ronsford Beaton without a run on the board.
Things got progressively worse when West Indies under-19 left-hander Shemron Hetmyer tried to force a ball from pacer Joshua Wade and spooned a catch to mid-on before he had scored.
Robin Bacchus was just beginning to look settled when he got a ball from Refier, who utilized the overcast conditions perfectly, that moved late off the seam and was taken by Kevin Boodie in the slip cordon. His 15 took 31 balls and his demise brought Kemo Paul to the crease to join the diminutive Singh.
Singh stroked Reifer delightfully back past his ankles for four when he pitched up and swiveled to pull the pacer disdainfully to the mid-wicket boundary off the next ball when the Bajan pounded it in short.
Singh looked in top form and elegantly caressed the lively Raun Johnson through the covers for four before leaning back to give himself room to majestically back-cut for consecutive boundaries behind point.
Singh reached the boundary six times from the 48 balls he faced and was five short of his half century when heavy rain sent the players scurrying off the field. Paul (5*) was the other batsman at the crease. Today is the final day.
