Courts 10k to renew Morgan, Josiah-Tanner rivalry Sunday
Alika Morgan has been one of the most dominant female road race runners in Guyana, until US-based, Euleen Josiah-Tanner started coming home to compete. Since then, the women road race title has been a straight fight between Josiah-Tanner and Morgan.
Tanner is the defending women’s champ at Courts’ 10km Road Race set for Sunday, but Morgan is always the one to beat and poses the biggest threat to Josiah-Tanner retaining her title. Morgan has already won the AINLIM 10k race in the absence of Josiah-Tanner.
Josiah-Tanner won the AINLIM race last year but flight issues prevented her from competing in the race a few weeks ago. Last year, Morgan was in Indonesia and missed the Courts 10km Road Race, giving Josiah-Tanner an easy win.
Morgan, who has won the prestigious CARICOM 10km Road Race and has placed second at the IAAF South American 10km Road Race on several occasions, is one of Guyana’s renowned and celebrated athletes. Josiah-Tanner has her accolades to boast as well.
Kaieteur Sport understands that both Morgan and Josiah-Tanner are registered for Sunday’s race and that means a renewal of the battle between Guyana’s top two female distance runners. It will, as expected, be a battle of attrition.
Morgan had run out of competition in races previously over the years, which is not her fault. The 10k race is not an easy event to compete in and athletes like Morgan, who pounds the road for all its worth just makes it more difficult for the ambitions of unassuming athletes.
Josiah-Tanner has provided the right competition for Morgan, and it is hoped that out of this new rivalry will emerge better times for both athletes; in that context, while one athlete loses, both are in a position to win with ever improving times consistently.
The 10k road race will also feature a host of other top women competing for the cash prizes, and trophies, up for grabs. The winners in the male and female senior categories will run away with a whopping $100,000. The second place finisher gets $75,000; third place $50,000; fourth pockets $30,000 and $20,000 for fifth place. The race starts at 6am Sunday.
