Dear Editor,
I wish to point out and unconstitutional and disrespectful act perpetuated by the former Minister of Water and Housing , Mr. Irfaan Ali , to the staff of the GNBS and more over the Nation as a whole.
The former Minister of Housing did a lot of injustice before leaving Office and what I’m about tell you might be shocking to some but true.
A few days before the PPP/C administration was officially relieved of their duties as the government of Guyana; former Minister Ali’s Personal Assistant Mr. Rajesh Ramgolam was appointed Deputy Director of the Guyana National Bureau of Standards.
This move was seen by many as an act of total disrespect and abuse of power since the manner in which this was done was not only wrong but unconstitutional.
The National Standard Act stipulates clearly the manner and protocol to be followed when appointing anyone for such position, in fact, such appointment falls under the sole custody of the National Standard Council and not the Minister.
The National standard Council is the legal body for such appointment.
While a lot of irregularities loom around the appointment of the former minister’s Personal Assistant to the position as deputy Director of an Organization he knows absolutely nothing about , what is more disturbing is that there were a number of persons within the Bureau who are qualified for the said position and also possesses the level of experience that the job entails.
If we were to examine the requirements based on legality, you would clearly see that it is stated that the vacancy should be published internally before externally, and while none of this was done, it is only fair for the Honorable Minister of State Mr. Joseph Harmon to look into this unconstitutional act and abuse of power.
Mr. Ramgolam lacks the knowledge of the job, and appointing him in front of Ms. Bostwick and many others, who would have given the Guyana National Bureau of Standards over a decade of hard work and dedication and is also qualified for the job, is not only a breach of the National Standard Act, but a slap in the faces of the staff of the GNBS.
N. Gomes
