The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Referees Fitness Instructor Alan Brown said the Referees Assistance Programme (RAP) course which is currently underway at the Resource Centre, Woolford Avenue is important for the development of the Referees.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday just after the opening ceremony, Brown said the programme is aimed at improving the environment in which the referees operate and also help them to become better professionals. “The programme is divided into two parts theory and practical so we get a fair opportunity to look at the technical aspect of the referees and what needs to be done,” he added.
“Fitness is very important for the development of the referees so we want to help them improve in this area. Without the fitness background their technical background will be very weak so at the conclusion of the course we want a full evaluation of their fitness as well as their technical and tactical areas concerning positing, recognition of fowls and movements,” he said adding that the demands of the local competition is not the same of the international game.
Head of the GFF Referees Department Stanley Lancaster said the programme is an excellent one and Referees has benefitted tremendously from it in the past. “Sherwin Moore officiated in Pan Am Games and one of our female Referees Maureese Skeete is in Canada doing Olympic Qualifiers so we have seen a lot of progress,” he stated.
FIFA Technical instructor Peter Pendergast, Abdula Hamid and Ingram Johnson are the other facilitators.
Lancaster informed that the GFF is now embarking on beginners courses nationwide.
